May 03, 2002
University of Maryland School of Nursing Auditorium
Baltimore, MD

Conference Description:
This one day conference will explore legal and ethical issues raised by recent regulatory policies, judicial opinions and government studies on children. Plenary sessions and panel presentations will focus on:

  • The recent policies adopted by NIH and FDA to encourage research with children

  • The National Children's Study (formerly the Longitudinal Cohort Study) being organized by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the Centers for Disease Control, and the Environmental Protection Agency that will attempt to enroll 100,000 children and follow them for 30 years

  • The Maryland Court of Appeals decision in the case of Grimes v. Kennedy Krieger Institute articulating a legal duty on the part of researchers and calling into question the practice of conducting non-therapeutic research with children that poses "any articulable risk beyond the minimal kind of risk that is inherent in any endeavor"
